Watch as many times as you need to feel like you understand!!  Remember that when he talks about decimal places, he uses a "decimal point" (.), but in Brazil we use a comma (,)  Enjoy!

Fractions and Measurement: What's it all about?!

Dear Parents!

As some of you know, Year 4 has been working on fractions since the beginning of the year.

We are working a lot to construct some concepts, here are a few that you can help with:

• model fractions and mixed numbers
• compare, order, and rename fractions
• interpret, model, compare, and order decimals to hundredths
• add and subtract decimals to hundredths
• solve and create problems involving the addition and subtraction of decimals to hundredths

Fractions and decimals are a common feature in our world.  Encourage your child to look for and use fractions and decimals at home.  For example, when your child is reading a book, ask her to tell you when she has read about one-half.

If you are dividing something into equal pieces, such as a cake, have your child name fractions that describe the pieces.  For example, when a cake is cut in 8 equal pieces, each person receives one eighth of the cake.  These real life experiences will solidify what we are learning in class!  

While shopping, encourage your child to look for decimals on price tags or labels.  Have your child help you estimate the total amount of your items, and how much change you will receive.  Then review the receipt when you get home!

Together we can make math fun and relevant to your child's life!
