Homework! Scented Play Dough

I hope you enjoyed our Play dough mats activity. For your first experiment you will have to make PLAY DOUGH. Watch the following tutorials to find out the ingredients and procedure. I usually make Play doh every month, therefore feel free to ask me questions. 

Recife has many cool stores that offer a variety of scents, food coloring, and even creme of tartar. Creme of tartar  (Cremor de tártaro)is not an essential ingredient but will make your Play dough last longer. You can find creme of tartar and food coloring at Kinitos. If you are allergic to food coloring , get creative and use spices such as: ginger, cinammon, nutmeg or cloves. I love to add real ginger slices or coconut shreds to my Play dough. I also get my scented oils at Farmacia Piramide. 

OBSERVATION: You do not have to follow my suggestions. You can add your own scents ( maybe you already have some scents at home). Sometimes I add strawberry or chocolate gelatin to my mixture. The brand Royal has many flavors to choose from.

1. Dudu had 12,080 Legos, but he lost 417 Legos. How many Legos does he have now?

2. Arthur baked 115 muffins, which was 17 more muffins than Malu. How many muffins did Malu bake?

 3. In the summertime, Murilo can earn $4 a day by cutting the grass. How many days will it take Murilo to earn $184?

 4. Dani has 5,092 crayons. Sofi has 3,971 crayons. How many more crayons does Dani have than Sofi?

 5. The turtle at the zoo weighs 145 pounds. It is five times heavier than the baby turtle. How much does the baby turtle weigh?

Forms of energy Homework

Energy is special. There's lots of it about and it's very useful. Why? What makes energy so important? Here's just a few reasons.

• it lets me swim fast and catch my fish
• it gets you out of bed in the morning
• it means that birds can fly, tigers can roar, wind can blow
• it makes the sun, the moon and stars shine
• it makes plants grow — food (= stored plant energy) for animals
• it makes cars move, factories produce things, light bulbs glow, planes fly and your computer work. I'll bet you can think of many more!

Without energy, there would be nothing: no life, no movement, no light, no heat, no you, no me… nothing.

But there is a problem with energy. Some people have got used to using far too much of it. This means that there's not enough for everyone. And using some kinds of energy causes terrible pollution and makes the Earth's climate get hotter.

This flipped homework is to categorize forms of energy. Are you ready for the challenge?

Instructions: 

Watch both videos, use your form of energy worksheet ( PYP notebook) to take notes. Remember, make it fun and easy to read. Messy and illegible handwriting makes it difficult to study and review when needed.

What is a Community?

A community is a group of people living or working together in the same area. People in communities might go to the same schools, shop at the same stores and do the same things. They also help each other and solve problems together. If it's a bigger community, the people in it might not always go to the same places, but they might like or believe in the same things. Watch both videos and take notes in your PYP notebook. Answer the following question: What type of community is Recife most like?. Compare and Contrast Recife with a different community around the World. Give at least 10 examples to support your answer. Add labeled drawings!. Enjoy the videos, come prepared to discuss in class.

Welcome Unit 5 " How we organize ourselves"

Our next Unit is “How we organize ourselves” An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. The structure and function of organizations; societal decision making ; economic activities and the impact on humankind and the environment. 

In the first part children will learn about key concept function which express various communities we belong to and how the communities are organized. In the second part we will learn about the roles of people who are part of our communities. This part of the unit is connected with key concept responsibilities. We will learn about the responsibilities community helpers have and why they are important for us.

Learner Profile Attributes for the unit and Attitudes:

 Children will learn to be knowledgeable when they will learn about the various communities and how they are organized.

 They will become open-minded when they will learn about community workers and why they are important for us.

 Children will learn to become reflective when they will talk about their future.

Early Life

Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 3, 1847.

When he was only eleven years old, he invented a machine that could clean wheat.

Graham studied anatomy and physiology at the University of London, but moved with his family to Quebec,Canada in 1870.

Working with the Deaf

Bell soon moved to Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1871, he began working with deaf people and published the system of Visible Hearing that was developed by his father. Visible Hearing illustrated how the tongue, lips, and throat are used to produce vocal sounds. In 1872, Bell founded a school for the deaf which soon became part of Boston University.

Telephone

Alexander Graham Bell is best known for his invention of the telephone. While trying to discover the secret to transmitting multiple messages on a single wire, Bell heard the sound of a plucked string along some of the electrical wire. One of Bell’s assistants, Thomas A. Watson was trying to reactivate a telephone transmitter. After hearing the sound, Bell believed he could send the sound of a human voice over the wire. After receiving a patent on March 7, 1876, for transmitting sound along a single wire, he successfully transmitted human speech on March 10th. Bell’s telephone patent was one of the most valuable patents ever issued.

National Geographic

Bell went on to invent a precursor to the modern day air conditioner, and a device called a “photophone” that enabled sound to be transmitted on a beam of light and on which today’s fiber optic and laser communication systems are based. In 1898, Alexander Graham Bell and his son-in law took over the National Geographic Society and built into one of the most recognized magazines in the world. Bell also helped found Science Magazine, one of the most respected research journals in the world.

Death

Alexander Graham Bell died August 2, 1922. On the day of his burial, in honor of Bell, all telephone service in the U.S. was stopped for one minute.

Folktales

What are folktales?

A folktale is a popular story that was passed on in spoken form, from one generation to the next. Usually the author is unknown and there are often many versions of the tale. Folktales comprise fables, fairy tales, old legends and even 'urban legends'. Again, some tales may have been based on a partial truth that has been lost or hidden over time. It is difficult to categorize folktales precisely because they fit into many categories.

Dear READERS,

The list that I am about to share with you has magic powers . It is a collection of shimmering jewels that have been with me for more than a decade. My childhood memories have been carved by these books. Enjoy! Let me know if you decide to get one of the books. Post a comment!

Ms. Carla as a fourth grader. Reading: Dot and Anton by Erich Kastner. I was inspired to have more life adventures after reading this book. 

This is a book that has a special place with me. It is one of the first books that I read and re-read in German. My teacher´s name was Mr. Horst Bill and he made fourth grade the most fun class ever. I won´t tell you a single thing about this book....let´s keep the mystery. Get it , you won´t regret or forget. You can get it in Amazon. 

Once upon a time there was a little witch who was only a hundred and twenty-seven years old. It's Walpurgis Night, when all the witches of the land meet to dance on the Brocken mountain, but the little Witch isn't invited........

Pippi Longstocking is a great book to read during your winter break. It´s funny  and creative.

Tommy and his sister Annika have a new neighbor, and her name is Pippi Longstocking. She has crazy red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and many adventures all over the world. 

This book has beautiful illustrations. Sempé a French illustrator is one of my favorites , his drawings are just breath taking. This classic book is about a mischievous schoolboy and his friends, originally published in French in 1959.

They're identical twins, Lisa living a colorful, big-city life with her father while Lottie lives in the country side with her mom. Why have their parents separated? They decide to switch hairstyles, manners, and addresses—and that is where the adventure begins.

I loved this collection of Encyclopedia Brown Mystery books. I  recommend you to start with this one. It will challenge you !

This is one of my TOP childhood books ever. It is a page turner and a little spooky. 

"Coraline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the new house. . . ."

When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem magical.

I  can still remember the day in the 4th grade I checked out this book from  our class library. This book made homework nights fun!!! 

The Monroe family has gone on vacation, leaving Harold  ( dog) and Chester (cat) at Chateau Bow-Wow -- not exactly a four-star hotel. On the animals' very first night there, strange things start to happen.....

Is Nick Allen a troublemaker? He really just likes to liven things up at school -- and he's always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he's got the inspiration for his best plan ever...

Everything our hero John Midas touches turns into chocolate! However, he soon finds out you can certainly have too much of anything, even chocolate. A cross between Bread and Jam for Frances and King Midas and the Golden Touch. For a strong reader or a bedtime “read to me.”

Perfect for: Kids who like classic stories.

Very funny book about a troublemaker little girl. You will have a blast reading about her school and family adventures. Be sure to get the first book of the collection.  ( Ramona and Beezus) 

I love all ROALD DAHL books, this one is probably my favorite due to the main character James. He is a risk taker and brave boy. If you like magic and fairy tales you will probably enjoy this book.
