Writing workshop

Persuasive writing is an important skill that can seem intimidating to elementary students. In fourth grade we  encourage students to use skills and knowledge they may not realize they already have. A classroom game introduces students to the basic concepts of lobbying for something that is important to them (or that they want) and making persuasive arguments. Students then choose their own persuasive piece to analyze and learn some of the definitions associated with persuasive writing. Once students become aware of the techniques used in oral arguments, they then apply them to independent persuasive writing activities and analyze the work of others to see if it contains effective persuasive techniques.


Currently, year 4 is in the "prewriting stage". We are brainstorming ideas and working on our graphic organizers.

How we organize ourselves

Esta semana começaremos com a quinta unidade, How we organize ourselves. Tendo como ideia central: Nossas atividades sociais e económicas causam impacto sobre a natureza e colocam em perigo a viabilidade da humanidade. Estaremos acompanhando a unidade com diversos livros de "The Magic School Bus" ( Unidade 6 no Maple Bear Book). Vamos conversar em casa sobre as diferentes atividades econômicas em Recife e porque não, no mundo. Convidemos coleguinhas de nossos filhos para um passeio relacionado ao tema, ou assistir um filme para depois refletir e discutir. Agora está disponível no Netflix o seriado "The Magic School Bus" e " Blue Planet" e nossa biblioteca está cheia de recursos magnificos. Sintam-se a vontade de nos procurar para dicas.

Welcome Unit 5 " How we organize ourselves"

Our next Unit is “How we organize ourselves” An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. The structure and function of organizations; societal decision making ; economic activities and the impact on humankind and the environment. 

In the first part children will learn about key concept function which express various communities we belong to and how the communities are organized. In the second part we will learn about the roles of people who are part of our communities. This part of the unit is connected with key concept responsibilities. We will learn about the responsibilities community helpers have and why they are important for us.

Learner Profile Attributes for the unit and Attitudes:

 Children will learn to be knowledgeable when they will learn about the various communities and how they are organized.

 They will become open-minded when they will learn about community workers and why they are important for us.

 Children will learn to become reflective when they will talk about their future.
