Economic activities and Weather Watch

Year 4 is working on economic activities in Brazil and around the world. They are learning about  different levels within our economic system and getting familiar with how our economic system works.  Students are getting their information from different sources. Next week they will begin with "Economic activities around the world" project. Fourth graders are also learning about weather and climate and the difference between them. We have been working in pairs on our Science Journals, it has been super fun.

We are inventors!

Tivemos o dia do inventor. –Ms. Carla e Ms. Patricia

Good morning Einstein!

Kid Inventors Day falls on Benjamin Franklin’s birthday and celebrates the curiosity and entrepreneurship of kids. To encourage our students to dream about their own inventions and learn about biographies, we celebrated an inventor’s day at school. The first step was to work on Maple Bear curricula unit 5 “biographies”. We catalogued our own classroom library and reserved a special “sanctuary” for our incredible non-fiction books. We visited the library and explored the biography section.
Students created rapport with Fernando, our school librarian, he guided them and suggested many books. Students shared the life of others through oral presentations and book reports. Students were learning about Elvis, Jackson Pollock, Sally Ride, Steve Jobs, Babe Ruth, Bill Gates, Queen Elizabeth even Barack and Michelle Obama were involved. Although most of the above mentioned are not inventors, it served as a trigger to introduce students to biographies. After, we invited them to research about inventors using a variety of resources. Google classroom provided a platform for guided research and keeping track of written evidence. Fourth graders also created their own inventions and patents, they had a blast. To finalize the unit project, they chose an inventor and created a trifold presentation in both languages. Students took action by presenting their character in different classrooms.

Writing workshop

Persuasive writing is an important skill that can seem intimidating to elementary students. In fourth grade we  encourage students to use skills and knowledge they may not realize they already have. A classroom game introduces students to the basic concepts of lobbying for something that is important to them (or that they want) and making persuasive arguments. Students then choose their own persuasive piece to analyze and learn some of the definitions associated with persuasive writing. Once students become aware of the techniques used in oral arguments, they then apply them to independent persuasive writing activities and analyze the work of others to see if it contains effective persuasive techniques.

Currently, year 4 is in the "prewriting stage". We are brainstorming ideas and working on our graphic organizers.
Love,
Ms. Carla

Wish us a happy writing journey!

Guten News
