Museo do Trem

Hello all!

Miss Patricia and I really want you parents to look over these photos with your children and ask them what they remember, what they learned, and how the museum helped them understand trains!  Of course, it can be in English or Portuguese!

Does anyone know what a "steam engine" is?

The students finally made it to the Museo do Trem after not arriving due to a manifestation on the first attempt.  The trip was part of a larger exploration of how ancient civilizations are similar and different from our current way of living.  We looked at transportation through a historical lens to get better perspective on the way our city is laid out today.

Everybody loved the chance to take a crazy photo!

The students then recapped their knowledge through an interactive game in teams!

We are hoping to take more field trips this year.  We really believe in the power of experiential learning.  After all, the world is the biggest, best classroom of them all!

Thanks!

Working on Understanding How Civilizations Work

In order to better understand the present, we are investigating the past.  In order to better understand the past, we are examining the present.

They made a visual representation of the cities and their services and presented to their colleagues.

"A civilização é antes de tudo vontade de conviver." -José Ortega y Gasset

The students from Year 4 A and B explored their ideas about how cities work.  They came up with questions after brainstorming all the services that the government provides.

Questions that Year 4 A came up with:

Why exactly do I see just a little bit of the public things?
-Marina F.

How do we get water up on to a hill?
-Marina X.

Why do some people depend on services from the government?
-Maria Clara

To whom does the government provide public services?
-Camila A.

Will the government always provide more and more schools?
-Julia A.

Why are public services so important?
-Fernanda

How do they use math in public services?
-Vinicius

Why doesn’t the government make more public services and public spaces for people that don’t have money?
-Anonymous

Why do some of the presidents not care about the problems of they city and say that they were already solved?
-Maria

Why aren’t there more public projects in the city?
-Maria

Why do we need so many orphanages if every child has a Dad and a Mom and every child is someone’s son or daughter?
-Anonymous

Why are most services not public?  Everybody needs a house right?  But not everyone has one.

Year 4B Starts Buddy Reading!

"No turma left behind!"

Year 4B started the first of many Buddy Reading sessions that will be happening over the course of the year.  They paired up with Year 1 and will be reading to, with, and for them all year long.

The goals of the program are many:

•  to help the Year 1 students hear and see what good reading looks like

•  to help the Year 4 students learn to teach the skills they already know, and reinforce them in the process

• to create a better sense of community in ABA Global School

Reading to younger students requires a focus and attention that students often don't require of themselves.  The Year 4 students felt responsible for the learning of the younger students and took it very seriously.

But they also made new friends!  As the year goes on they will get to know each other much better!
